You should see a music paper come home this week. THis was a chance for your child to compose their own melody using all the notes of the pentatonic scale (do re mi sol la do’) in either simple (4/4) or compound (6/8) meter. Students were then given the choice for how they would perform their song: either on xylophone or singing. This is something that uses previously learned information and was being used as a diagnostic to see what students level of competency was with the concepts.
Please do the following:
1. read the paper
2. have your child sing through their song (if they can)
3. sign the paper
4. have your child bring it back for credit.

This week you should see a homework paper come home from the music room. THis was a rhythm composition that we did in compound meter (6/8). Students needed to use previously learned knowledge to write an idea and then perform it for Mr. weller. A final step was to transfer the song to another instrument (i.e. xylophone or drums).
- have your child clap and say their song to you
- sign the paper
- have your child bring it back to the music room for credit.

This week you should see an assignment come home from the music room. This was a diagnostic experience for your child where they had to write down the solfege from a known song, sing it, and then put it on the staff. They needed to use previously learned information for this task. All the work was done in class so there is nothing more they need to complete on it.
Please take a moment to hear your child sing the song and then sign it and have them bring it back to the music room for credit.

My name is Claire Folson, and I will be a student teacher in your child’s music class with Mr. Weller through mid-October. I am very thankful and excited to have the opportunity to work with your child and to learn alongside them Following student teaching, I will be graduating from St. Olaf College in December with a degree in instrumental music education.
A little bit about myself: I am from Grand Forks, ND, but I consider Minnesota my other home. I love to play my violin, sing, read, go for walks, and have long conversations with family and friends. Some of my greatest memories and friendships have been made through my musical experiences, and it all started from a young age when I learned all about what music what music has to offer in my life. I am excited to take part in helping your child grow as a musician!

1. look at their work an have them complete any steps that are not done
2. have them play (or sing!) their song for you
3. sign the paper
4. have them bring it back
If they want to earn a "belt" for their recorder they need…
– to have a white belt already (they can still test for me on that one)
– to have a 3 or 4 in the "playing" box
– put the paper on my desk (not in the folder like ususal)
If they want to re-play any of the songs (white or yellow) to earn a belt they can...
– send me a video via email
– login to www.classdojo.com and record their video
– come play for me at the end of the day at 3:45pm .

You should have seen a music assignment come home on friday (or today) called "white belt recorder composition". This was an opportunity for students to show me what they can play on their recorders. To do this, they needed to use previously learned concepts of pitch and rhythm as well as the new information of how to play the recorder with articulation and correct fingers.
Please listen to your student play their song, sign the paper and then send it back with them for credit.
If your student wishes to earn an actual "belt" for playing their song, they must:
1. complete playing their song into www.classdojo.com (it should not be listed as a "draft")
2. return the paper to my desk
